A Lil Georgia History
In 1539, a Spanish sailor ,Hernando de Soto, landed at Tampa Bay Florida. He brought with him a large expedition. De Soto and his men entered Georgia after a year of very difficult travel in Florida. They became the first Europeans to step foot into Georgia. De Soto found the Indians of Georgia to be more friendly than the Florida Indians. De Soto's stay in Georgia was short. For he had the long march to the Mississippi River ahead of him. In 1566, Spaniards built missions on the Sea Islands along the coast of Georgia. Missionaries and explorers moved from these coastal centers into Georgia. In 1732, King George II of England granted the Charter for the Colony of Georgia. An Englishman, by the name of James Oglethorpe founded the Georgia colony for Englan in 1733. He requested to start a settlement in America. The king Franted Oglethorpe's request. The king had good reason for doing so. England wanted help in protecting its colony of South Carolina from the French and Spanish. Oglethorpe and a group of settlers arrived at Savannah in 1733. Oglethorpe defeated the Spanish at the battled of Bloody Marsh on St. Simon Island in 1742. The Spanish influence was ended because of this battle. Georgia became a royal province in 1754. It adopted its first constitution in 1776 and ratified it a year later. Georgia became a state on Jan 2, 1788. |
