Bidding Wars
I recently went online looking for a MP3 player for my sister. We ended up at an auction site. We saw a 2 GB MP3 player that had no bids on it. The minimun bid was $1. So, that's what we bid. Within moments, we received a message saying our dollar bid had just been outbid by another bidder. Their bid was $1.50. We were given the option of bidding again. We did. We bid $2 this time.
And you guessed it, we were outbid by this new bidder once again. We bid $3.50. My sister and I had begun to think that this new bidder was one of this auction sites computers.
It was outbidding us to make us reach the price they wanted us to pay for the MP3 player. My sister had now grown increasingly frustated and told me not to bid over
$5. We know you can't buy a good MP3 player for $5 but she did not want to get into a bidding war with a computer. Our last bid was for $4.75. Again this new bidder had outbid us with a bid of $5.00. It gave us the option to place a bid of $5.25 but my sister was not hearing any of this. She had given me a $5.00 limit and that was over her limit.
We left this site and decided to go to look elsewhere for a MP3 player. I know, as well as my sister, that you can not buy a MP3 player for $5 or less. This was our first experience with an online auction site. We had no idea that you would get into a bidding war with a computer. We don't know for sure that it was a computer bidding against us. But it made us wonder. The item had no bids on it before I placed a bid on it. And soon as I did bid on it, a new bidder comes out of nowhere and outbids me, and continued to outbid me. We found this to be a little strange. I'm sure you have guessed that we did not get the MP3 player. We left that site and decided to try another site that wasn't an auction site. |
