Will This Soup Be The End of Sharks.....?
There was a report on Anderson Cooper 360 the other night that caught my attention. It was about soup. Not just any soup. Shark fin soup. Yes, that's right shark fin soup. A soup made from shark fins. I don't know about anyone else, but this was my first time hearing of this soup. Shark fin soup is a Chinese delicasy. It is commonly served as a feast on special occasions, such as weddings or other special occasions. Served to impress guests, shark fin soup has become more popular as the Chinese middle class expands. Catching sharks for a lot of fisherman has become a viable way to making a decent income. Shark's meat didn't used to have much worth. That has all changed since their fins have become valuable. Shark fins sell for as much as $700 per kilogram in Asia. This makes big sharks worth thousands. Shark fin is said to have medicinal qualities and can cost $200 a bowl. Making them a valuable commodity to the fisherman. These fisherman see these sharks as way of paying their bills. Sharks are their livelyhood. But is their livelyhood killing off the Ocean's natural predator? Hundreds of thousands are sharks are killed each year for their fins. Some meat. But mostly for their fins. Fishermen take sharp boning knives and dismember these poor predators of the sea. Some sharks are caught, definned and thrown back into the water. Without their fins, how is this creature supposed to survive? This practice of killing sharks for their fins just for a bowl of soup is destroying the ocean's ecosystem. If you kill off the sharks, what effect will that have on we humans?
